The United States opposed the spread of Communism. The goal of the United States was to contain communism and prevent it from spreading any further. This relates to the Soviet-Afghan war as the Soviet Union had a communist government. The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in order to aid the communist government there . Hence, the Soviet Union's attempt to stabilize the communist government threatened the US's policy to prevent communist governments from forming. This lead the US to begin sending money and information to the group who were attempting to overthrow the Afghan government (the mujahideen) and get the Soviet Union out of Afghanistan. Therefore, while the USSR attempted to secure the communist government government of Afghanistan, the US was fighting to end it. This is the policy and theme throughout the Cold War as there were no actual military battles between the US and the USSR, just passive aggressive battles such as this one.
